In 2011, a few weeks after the CES show, Samsung released the new PN51D450. Next to the diagonal which increased from 50-Inch to 51-Inch there are several other changes compared to the PN50C450, too.

While the stand remained almost identical, the screen is now only 2.2-Inch thick, compared to 2.7-Inches of the older 2010 model. The design was slightly changed, too, the PN51D450 features a high glossy black bezel without the red touch of color of the C450 series.
There isn’t any big difference in the specs of the PN51D450, they are pretty much identical to the C450, just a few minor image quality improvements. One HDMI port was replaced with two HD component inputs for a total of 2x HDMI, 2x HD component 1x PC as well as 1x USB 2.0.
The best news: The price stayed the same and on Amazon the new Samsung PN51D450 costs the same as the used PN50C450, so you should definitely go for the D450 from 2011.

Customer Opinion, Bob A. from California: I’ve had this Samsung HDTV for a week now and like many others, I spent a lot of time researching before buying it. The general consensus is that up close you can tell it’s 720p, so if you sit several feet away, its almost a non-issue. I was originally thinking of purchasing a 42 inch plasma but after actually going to the store and looking and comparing, there is no doubt about it, bigger is definitely better. This TV does not suffer from pixelated blocks that appear on most LCDs with very fast motion occurs on the screen. Great HDTV at a cheap price!

User Opinion, A. James from Florida: Price was a big and probably the primary consideration for me, winner hands down, the cheap C450. Ultimately, you give up some features compared to the newest 1080p Samsung HDTVs, but I did not see enough picture quality and feature differences to justify the price jump to the 1080p plasma.

What screen size is recommended for what viewing distance? The following chart shows you if the PN50C450 is the HDTV of your choice or how it should be placed correctly:

In general, there is a very easy formula to calculate the minimum and maximum viewing distance:
Minimum display size in inches = Viewing distance in inches divided by 3
Maximum display size in inches = Viewing distance in inches divided by 1.5
This is just a rough calculation, individual perception varies alot and depends on the screen as well. For plasma screens the picture doesn’t become as blurry as for LCD displays if you are sitting too close. If you are used to small CRT TV, you’ll probably enjoy a screen size far smaller than the calculated minumum as well.

The C450 plasma series offers different screen sizes, the key features are the same as for the PN50C450
The second very popular model is the 42-Inch PN42C450 which costs about $200 less and offers a really good value for money as well.

Always make sure to check the prefix of the offered HDTV, all Samsung plasma serial numbers start with “PN”, while the Lcd/Led models start with “LN” or “UN”. This can sometimes be a little confusing, because there is for example a LCD with 32-Inch called LN32C450 as well for example.
For PN50C450.
To connect the PN50C450 to various external devices like a DVD Player, Blu-Ray Player or HDD Recorder you need HDMI cables that support the HDMI 1.3 standard, especially for optimal sound output.

We always recommend the Mediabridge Ultra Series, high quality cables at an affordable price, e.g. 6ft for $9.99
